Speakers Timuel Black was raised in Chicago since 1919. He is a revered and highly respected educator, political activist, community leader, oral historian, and philosopher. He abandoned his doctoral studies at the University of Chicago to actively participated in the civil rights movement. Tim has organized toward such issues as unions, racial equality. He is a also a pioneer of the independent black political movement. He is the author of Bridge of Memory: Chicago’s First Wave of Great Migration and Bridges of Memory: Chicago's Second Generation of Black Migration. He is currently writing his memoirs, Sacred Ground.
Rosie Simpson has fought against social injustice in many capacities as on organizer in various Chicago communities on multiple issues such as unions, quality education, and voters’ rights. She joined the non-violent civil rights movement with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he came to Chicago. She has worked with organizations such as SWAP through the University of Chicago, the Woodlawn Organization (TWO) and with the state of Illinois as a director of community organization for Human Relations Commission.
Through Don Watanabe’s experiences growing up as a Japanese child born into a poor family he grew up during WWII and developed a strong desire to fight against anti-militarism, anti-racism, anti-war organization efforts, and anti-oppression of poor people and people of color. He was active in the anti-war and civil rights movement . He most recently was involved in the Showdown in Chicago on Oct. 25-27th of this year, which contested big business bailouts at the expense of tax payers.

Harold Rogers is a distinguished professor of East African history with a wide range of interests, who has been active in the civil rights movement through Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Black Panthers, the African National Congress (ANC), African American Studies, Cuban relations, and labor unions.

(Chicago, IL) Young Authors (YCA), a Chicago youth arts organization that encourages self-expression and literacy through creative writing, performance and publication, has been recently recognized by Mrs. Michelle Obama by receiving the prestigious Coming Up Taller Award on November 4, 2009 in Washington DC. Come celebrate this exciting achievement. The evening will feature over 30 local authors, who will be available in-person to sign purchased books, live interviews with several authors, multi-cultural and multi-generational writers, as well as performances and presentations by YCA’s poets and writers. YCA will host a Holiday Book Bash to feature. Proceeds will benefit YCA.
